Machine frame 2 is of steel box construction with sole plates 1 at ground level and guide Rails 5 at the winding level. Pope Reel 8 is dynamically balanced and mounted on self aligning spherical roller bearings (SKF / FAG etc). Doctor beam 12 cleans the pope reel on a continuous basis.
Primary arm 3 is mounted on the same axis as pope reel and it is operated by hydraulic cylinder 9 and is controlled by a “negative load” valve, to enable smooth lowering of primary arm with pre-wound reel. Two primary arms are mechanically interconnected to synchronise the same.
Nip loading at primary stage is achieved by cylinders 6 and individual pressures can be controlled from control station. When piston of 6 is with drawn, fresh empty reel can be loaded either by crane or from magazine 15 above.
Secondary arm 4 provides Nip load during winding. Two separate cylinders 7 with independent Regulators allow Nip loading to be precisely controlled from control station. Provision is made to adjust parallality of two secondary arms by screw 14.
When the roll 11 reaches full size, piston of 7 kicks the roll to the right hand end position 17 where it will be retained by cam & spring. Hardened and ground rail on beam 5 guarantees long life for the machine.
Provision exists to supply cooling water to the Pope reel and to evacuate hot water from it.
